What is HEIF/HEVC?

Category : Specification / Capacity / Performance

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) / HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) is a new encoding technique adopted by Apple in iOS 11 that will effectively save storage space.

  • Photos taken in this format will be saved as .HEIC files.
  • Videos recorded in this format will be saved as .HEVC files.

Only iOS devices that feature an A10 CPU (or above) can create & save files in the HEIC / HEVC format, such as the following models.

Playing HEVC videos: devices with an A9 CPU (or above), such as the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

Displaying HEIF images: iOS11 or later.
